GTA Driving XBox360 Sales... Hard
GTA IV Sold Alongside Almost Half of New Consoles
The clearly impartial website called XBox360Fanboy relates a Microsoft report on booming 360 sales the week of GTA IV's release. As hoped, the title is encouraging many, many buyers to make the leap to a next-gen platform.
Speaking of achievements, Microsoft revealed that in the first week, 2.3 million gamers unlocked upwards of 12 million GTAIV achievement, worth somewhere around 100 million Gamerscore. Yowzaz! We also learn that retailers report that 60% of all GTAIV software sales were the Xbox 360 version which MS estimates increased 360 hardware sales by 54% week over week.
New platform-owners who are buying their consoles now because of GTA IV's arrival are choosing the XBox360 version over the PS3 version by a 60-40 margin. That makes sense, as the 360 is the cheaper platform, and if you're buying a console for just one game... why sink extra money into a Blu-Ray player you won't use?
We're looking for matching data from the Sony camp, which we can only imagine has also seen a spike in console sales this month. In the mean time, the whole XBox-y story, full of tasty facts and figures, is available at XBox 360 Fanboy.
