Or: How Bowling is Good for You!
The pointlessness of the dating in GTA (especially the 'man-dating') turns out to be a little less pointless than you might think. Make certain girlfriends (or good buddies) happy enough and they'll start doing favors for you, on demand. Here's a quick list of who's worth befriending in Liberty City.

Special Cell Phone Numbers in GTA IV Replace Thumb Olympics
In lieu of 'up up down down left right left right B A start' (ahem), GTA IV gives us unlisted phone numbers as cheat codes. In this newest chapter of the twisted-up GTA saga, you can enter one of the special phone numbers below into your cell phone to cause an instant 'cheat' to happen.

New York Times Examines GTA IV vs NYC, Reveals Cheat?
GTA has always been more of a New York Post sort of game, but today David Itzkoff, a 'real writer' who works for the New York Times, attempts to take on some of the deeper aspects of immersive gameworld design in his review of GTA IV's Liberty City... without revealing too much of his East Coast Liberal Media XBox Elite bias. Itzkoff, who usually reviews books and movies for the Times, has put together a deep and readable article here, especially for non-gamers. It's much more interesting and refreshing to see a treatment like this than yet another press-release driven 'review'. While his ivory tower does glimmer a bit from time to time (Who else but New Yorkers could possibly understand or appreciate this, he explains matter of factly), it's never blinding, and he does give this shiny blinky 'videogame' a serious treatment, and we always welcome that: too much public discourse about GTA is trapped in a sort of "oh but it will corrupt our children!" loop. In an aside, and perhaps accidentally, he even reveals what might be a hidden GTA IV cheat. More on that later.

Hidden Pigeons Replace Hidden Packages
GTA III had hidden packages to collect, lovely little duct-taped blocks of mysterious white powder. GTA IV takes a higher-concept (and more realistic) approach, with 200 nasty pigeons to exterminate around (New) Liberty City. If you manage to wipe all all 200 (whew) you'll be rewarded with a nice, shiny and always-available Annihilator helicopter. (Hmmm... that's not very original. Isn't that what we got last time, too?) Anyway, thanks to www.whattheydonotwantyoutoknow.com, here are two lovely maps to help you find the dirty birds.

Why Use the Virtual World when the Virtual Virtual World Better?
One of the biggest areas in which GTA IV expands on what came before is the Internet. No, not the online multiplayer games, but the in-game Internet that your character uses. It's a story element in various missions, as well as a resource and a source of deep background info, tips and secrets.

Rockstar is very good at adding cute touches and ALMOST getting them right. In the same way that the $200 jillion company can't ever seem to find a closed-caption writer who can spell, they come THIS CLOSE to nailing a great touch on GTA IV's motorcycles.

About GTA Confidential
GTA Confidential is a community site started by a couple of ex-industry gearheads in which we study, admire, play and dissect Grand Theft Auto.
We've canned the old site for this fresh start: we'll be collecting maps, tips, walkthroughs and other interesting GTA IV related stuff here, with something new every day or so. If you're looking for our older writings on San Andreas or older games, you're out of luck, sorry.
